Administrative Campus Fire Safety Plan

Site Application:

This Fire Safety Plan governs the physical campus of Am-Can Business & Tech Institute located in Vaughan, Ontario. It applies to all administration, faculty, and students attending in-person classes. Please note that our 100% online continuous-intake courses are hosted on secure off-site servers and will remain fully operational and unaffected by any physical campus evacuations.

1. Emergency Contact Information
  • Emergency Services (Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service): 911

  • Non-Emergency Vaughan Fire Dispatch: 905-832-8506

  • Building Property Management: 905-499-3631

  • School Principal / Chief Fire Warden: 905-326-0045

2. Supervisory Staff and Faculty Responsibilities

Under the Ontario Fire Code for educational institutions, responsibilities are distributed among administration and teaching staff to ensure the safe evacuation of the student body.

The Principal (Chief Fire Warden) is responsible for:

  • Maintaining the approved status of all physical fire safety systems.

  • Conducting and logging mandatory school fire drills. The Ministry and OFC require a minimum of three total drills in the Fall term and three total drills in the Spring term for in-person students.

  • Meeting Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service upon their arrival to provide a status update on the evacuation and building access.

Teachers and Instructors are responsible for:

  • Knowing the primary and secondary evacuation routes from their specific classrooms.

  • Directing the immediate, orderly evacuation of all in-person students when the alarm sounds.

  • Taking the daily physical attendance roster outside to the assembly area to conduct a headcount.

  • Ensuring no student is left behind in classrooms, adjoining break-out rooms, or washrooms.

3. Emergency Evacuation Procedures

If a staff member or student discovers a fire or smells smoke:

  1. Leave the area immediately. Do not attempt to gather laptops, backpacks, or personal belongings.

  2. Close all doors behind you to contain the fire and smoke.

  3. Activate the building fire alarm using the nearest pull station in the corridor.

  4. Evacuate the building using the nearest safe exit. Do not use elevators.

  5. Call 911 from a safe location outside to notify Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service. Provide the exact municipal address of the campus.

If the fire alarm sounds (Evacuation Protocol):

  1. Stop all instruction immediately. Teachers will instruct students to stand up, leave their belongings, and exit the classroom in a single file line.

  2. Teachers must be the last to leave the classroom, ensuring it is empty, and must close the classroom door firmly behind them.

  3. Evacuate the building via the nearest designated exit route.

  4. Assemble at the designated outdoor meeting area (for example, the far end of the parking lot, safely away from fire hydrants and emergency vehicle access routes).

  5. Teachers will conduct a roll call using their daily attendance roster and immediately report any missing students to the Principal.

  6. No staff or student may re-enter the building until VFRS gives the official "all clear" command.

4. Fire Hazard Control and Institutional Security

To maintain the approved safety standards established by your successful Vaughan Fire inspections, the campus must enforce strict daily hazard controls.

  • Classroom and Lab Safety: Any specialized equipment used in in-person Tech, Science, or Architecture courses must be powered down at the end of each instructional day. Combustible materials must be stored in approved fire-rated cabinets.

  • Egress Routes: Hallways, emergency exit doors, and pathways to fire extinguishers must remain completely free of student desks, surplus furniture, and IT equipment at all times.

  • OSR Storage Security: All physical Ontario Student Record (OSR) folders must be stored in closed, metal filing cabinets in the main office. In the event of an evacuation, staff must prioritize human life and evacuate immediately, relying on the physical fire-rated cabinets to protect the Ministry documents.

5. Routine Inspection and Maintenance Schedule

Because the building has already passed its compliance inspections, your ongoing operational duty is to maintain these systems according to the strict OFC schedule. All actions must be documented in the official Fire Logbook kept in the main office.
