Am-Can Business & Tech Institute operates on a 100% online or 100% in-person, continuous-intake model. Students in Grades 9 to 12, as well as mature adult learners, may apply and enroll in our courses at any time of the year. Admission is finalized, and course access is granted, only once identity documents are verified and academic prerequisites are cleared.
Many of our senior-level university preparatory courses, such as Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U), Physics (SPH4U), Chemistry (SCH4U), and Financial Accounting (BAT4M), require the successful completion of specific prerequisite courses. These prerequisites are explicitly mandated by the Ontario Ministry of Education’s curriculum guidelines to ensure students have the foundational knowledge required to succeed.
Verification Process: Prior to being granted access to the Learning Management System (www.techstudy.ca), a student must submit a digital copy of an official Ontario Student Transcript (OST), a final provincial report card, or an equivalent academic record demonstrating successful completion of the required prerequisite course.
We recognize that adult learners returning to education may not possess a recent secondary school diploma or verifiable transcript equivalency. To accommodate these learners without compromising academic integrity, Am-Can Business & Tech Institute offers the Mature Student Assessment (MSA).
Eligibility: This online assessment is strictly available to adult learners over the age of 18.
Purpose: The MSA is used to formally verify a student's cognitive and academic readiness for senior-level (Grade 11 and 12) university/mixed (4U/4M) courses. Successfully passing the MSA serves as legal verification that the student meets the basic admission prerequisites for their chosen academic pathway.
Administration: The MSA is an online test administered through our secure portal. A standard non-refundable assessment fee applies.
In accordance with Ministry of Education policy, the school Principal holds the authority to waive a curriculum prerequisite.
Eligibility: A waiver may be granted if the Principal determines that the student possesses the prior knowledge and skills to be successful in the target course without having taken the formal Ontario prerequisite. This pathway is utilized for students with extensive out-of-province academic backgrounds, or mature professionals whose work experience aligns with the course curriculum.
Application: Students must submit a formal Prerequisite Waiver Application, along with supporting documentation (such as a resume or MSA test results), for the Principal’s review prior to enrollment.
For students who do not hold a standard Ontario transcript but wish to earn an OSSD or enroll in courses requiring prerequisites, Am-Can Business & Tech Institute utilizes the Ministry-mandated PLAR process. This process is governed by the Ministry's Policy/Program Memorandum 129 and Policy/Program Memorandum 132 for mature students.
PLAR Equivalency: International students or students transitioning from other Canadian provinces will have their out-of-jurisdiction credentials assessed to determine equivalent Ontario credits. This allows for direct, appropriate placement into our senior-level courses.
PLAR Challenge: Eligible students may challenge specific Grade 10, 11, or 12 courses for credit by undergoing a formal assessment of their prior learning.
6. Required Enrollment Documents
To legally process an admission and establish or request the Ontario Student Record (OSR), which will be maintained securely at our physical administrative campus in Vaughan, Ontario, the following documents must be submitted via our secure registration portal:
Proof of Identity and Age: A copy of a valid government-issued document (such as a Birth Certificate, Passport, or Canadian Citizenship Card) to verify the student's legal name and age.
Academic Records: The most recent official transcript, report card, credit counselling summary, or successful MSA test result.
