Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting Policy

1. Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting Policy

Alignment: Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting in Ontario Schools

Am-Can Business & Tech Institute evaluates student achievement based on provincial curriculum expectations and the achievement chart.

  • Triangulation of Evidence: Student evaluation is based on observations, conversations, and student products. In our 100% online environment, this includes video-vetted presentations, active discussion board participation, and submitted digital assignments.

  • Grade Determination: A final grade is recorded for every course, expressed as a percentage.

    • 70% of the grade is based on formative and summative evaluations conducted throughout the course.

    • 30% of the grade is based on a final summative evaluation (a proctored digital exam, a culminating project, or a combination of both) administered toward the end of the course.

  • Reporting: Students receive an official Mid-Term Provincial Report Card upon completion of 50% of the instructional material, and a Final Provincial Report Card upon course completion.

2. Academic Honesty and Plagiarism Policy

Am-Can Business & Tech Institute enforces a strict policy regarding academic dishonesty to maintain the integrity of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

  • Definitions: Academic dishonesty includes plagiarism, contract cheating (paying a third party to complete work), identity misrepresentation during online exams, and the unauthorized use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) text or code generators (e.g., ChatGPT, Photomath) on summative evaluations.

  • Consequences: If a student commits an academic offense, the teacher will investigate and notify the Principal. Consequences range from requiring the student to redo the assignment under supervision, a mark of zero on the evaluation, or in severe/repeated cases, immediate academic expulsion post-enrollment without a refund.

  • Identity Verification: All major summative evaluations and final exams are strictly administered utilizing secure browser lockdown software and live/recorded camera invigilation to verify student identity.

3. OSSD Graduation Requirements Policy (Updated for 2026 Compliance)

To earn an OSSD at Am-Can Business & Tech Institute, students who entered Grade 9 in the 2024–2025 school year or later must complete a minimum of 30 credits, distributed as 17 compulsory credits and 13 optional credits.

  • New STEM and Tech Requirements: The 17 compulsory credits mandate the successful completion of 1 Technological Education credit (Grade 9 or 10) and 1 additional STEM-related credit.

  • Financial Literacy Requirement: As mandated by the Ministry for students graduating in 2025 and beyond, students must successfully pass the financial literacy graduation requirement embedded within the compulsory Grade 10 Mathematics course.

  • Provincial Literacy Requirement: Students must demonstrate standard literacy skills by successfully completing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC).

  • Community Involvement: Students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of approved community involvement activities.

4. Online Learning Graduation Requirement Policy

Alignment: Policy/Program Memorandum (PPM) 167

The Ministry of Education requires all students to earn a minimum of two online learning credits to fulfill their OSSD graduation requirements.

  • Fulfillment: Because Am-Can Business & Tech Institute operates a 100% online, asynchronous delivery model, any student completing two or more credits with us will automatically fulfill this provincial mandate.

  • Exemption/Opt-Out: Parents, guardians, or students aged 18 and older may choose to opt out of the mandatory online learning requirement. A formal Opt-Out Form must be completed and added to the student's Ontario Student Record (OSR).

5. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Policy

Alignment: PPM 129 and PPM 132

The PLAR process allows students to earn credits toward their OSSD for knowledge and skills acquired through prior study or life experience.

  • Equivalency Process: International students or out-of-province students transitioning to our Institute will have their official transcripts evaluated by the Principal to determine OSSD credit equivalencies.

  • Challenge Process: Regular day-school students may challenge up to four Grade 10, 11, or 12 courses for credit (maximum of two per discipline) by demonstrating that they have met the curriculum expectations through a formal assessment process. A non-refundable PLAR administration fee applies.

6. Access to the Ontario Student Record (OSR) and Transcript (OST)

Alignment: The Education Act and OSR Guideline

The school administration team in Vaughan, Ontario, is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and legally transferring the OSR and OST.

  • Access Rights: Every student, and the parent/guardian of a student under the age of 18, has the legal right to access and review the contents of their OSR.

  • Full Disclosure Policy: For Grade 11 and 12 courses, our school adheres strictly to the Ministry's Full Disclosure Policy. If a student withdraws from a senior-level course more than five (5) instructional days after the issuance of their Mid-Term Report Card, the withdrawal (W) and the student's percentage grade at the time of withdrawal will be permanently recorded on the OST.

7. Code of Conduct and Acceptable Use of Technology

Even in a 100% digital environment, students must conduct themselves with respect, dignity, and professionalism.

  • Digital Citizenship: Harassment, cyberbullying, or the use of profanity/hate speech in any LMS discussion board, peer review, or email communication with faculty is strictly prohibited.

  • Network Security: Attempting to bypass the security protocols of www.techstudy.ca, distributing viruses, or attempting to access the administrative backend of the LMS will result in immediate post-enrollment expulsion and potential referral to law enforcement.
