Am-Can Business & Tech Institute is dedicated to ensuring that students are placed in courses that align with their academic background, career goals, and current skill levels. This policy outlines the procedures for transferring between courses within our techstudy.ca e-LMS platform and the process for requesting a waiver for a course prerequisite.
Because we operate on a continuous intake model, we offer flexibility for students who enroll in a course but quickly realize they need to change their academic path.
Transfer Window and Conditions:
Within 14 Days: A student may request to transfer to a different Am-Can course within the first 14 days of their original enrollment date, provided they have not completed more than 15% of the course modules or submitted any major evaluations.
Approval: All course transfers must be approved by the Office of the Principal or a designated guidance counselor to ensure the new course meets the student's graduation requirements.
Fees: A single course transfer within the 14-day window is generally processed without an administrative fee. Subsequent transfers or transfers requested outside this window may be subject to a transfer fee.
Full Disclosure (Grade 11 and 12 Courses): In accordance with Ministry of Education regulations, all Grade 11 and 12 courses are subject to the Full Disclosure policy.
If a student transfers out of or withdraws from a Grade 11 or 12 course after completing 50% of the instructional hours (or after the midterm report has been issued), the withdrawal and the student's current percentage grade will be recorded on their Ontario Student Transcript (OST).
Withdrawals prior to the 50% completion mark will not be recorded on the OST. Grade 9 and 10 course withdrawals are not recorded on the OST at any point.
Most Grade 11 and 12 courses in Ontario, as well as some Grade 10 courses, have specific prerequisites established by the Ministry of Education. A prerequisite ensures a student has the foundational knowledge required to succeed in a higher-level course.
Authority to Waive Prerequisites: Under specific circumstances, the Principal of Am-Can Business & Tech Institute has the authority to waive a prerequisite. This decision is made strictly on a case-by-case basis and only if the Principal determines that the student possesses the equivalent knowledge and skills to be successful in the target course.
Eligibility for a Waiver: A student may apply for a prerequisite waiver if they:
Have completed a similar or equivalent course outside of Ontario (e.g., in another Canadian province or internationally).
Are a mature student with relevant life, work, or professional experience.
Have demonstrated exceptional academic ability in a related subject area.
Waiver Application Process:
Submission: The student (or parent/guardian if the student is under 18) must submit a formal Prerequisite Waiver Application Form to the Admissions Office prior to enrolling in the target course.
Evidence: The application must include supporting documentation, such as out-of-province transcripts, a portfolio of work, reference letters, or proof of relevant experience.
Evaluation: The Principal, often in consultation with a subject-matter expert or Guidance Counselor, will review the evidence. The student may be asked to complete a brief diagnostic assessment or interview.
Decision and Record Keeping: If approved, the prerequisite is waived, and the student may register for the course. The completed waiver application and the Principal’s written approval will be permanently filed in the student’s Ontario Student Record (OSR).
Note: Waiving a prerequisite does not grant the student a credit for the prerequisite course itself; it simply allows them to bypass it to enter the higher-level course.
For students transferring to Am-Can Business & Tech Institute from educational systems outside of Ontario, a formal transcript evaluation is required. The administration will review the student's previous academic records to determine equivalent credit grants and automatically apply prerequisite waivers where previous coursework satisfies Ontario curriculum expectations.
