What a prerequisite is. A prerequisite is a course you must have completed before you enrol in the next one. Prerequisites are set by the Ontario Ministry of Education in the curriculum policy documents, not by the school, and they are the same at every Ontario secondary school.
Eight of our courses have no prerequisite at all. You can start with any of those today.

| OLC4O | Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course | 12 | Open | See the note below. This course has an eligibility rule rather than a course prerequisite. |
OLC4O, the literacy course. This course substitutes for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test as a graduation requirement. To enrol you must have been eligible to write the OSSLT at least twice and have been unsuccessful at least once. A student who has not met that condition may be admitted at the Principal's discretion where it is in the student's educational interest. Speak to us before you register if you are not sure whether you qualify.

If you do not have the prerequisite
You have three options, and admissions will help you work out which one applies.
- Take the prerequisite here first. Each course is six weeks. Because you take one course per session, a prerequisite completed in one session lets you start the next course in the session that follows.
- Send us proof you already have it. A transcript, a report card, or your Ontario Student Record from your previous school. If you attended an Ontario school we request the record for you.
- Ask for a prerequisite waiver. Under Ontario policy a principal may waive a prerequisite where it is in the student's educational interest. This is a decision the Principal makes on the evidence, not something granted automatically, and it is recorded. See our Course Transfer and Prerequisite Waiver Policy.
Where these prerequisites come from
Every prerequisite on this page is stated in the wording used by the Ontario Ministry of Education in the curriculum policy document for that subject. The school does not set them, cannot widen them, and cannot narrow them. The course code is shown in brackets as a reading aid only. They are identical at every Ontario secondary school, which is why a credit earned here carries the same weight as one earned anywhere else in the province.
The full course descriptions, credit values, hours and assessment information are in the School Course Calendar. If anything on this page and the Course Calendar disagree, the Course Calendar is the governing document and we will correct the difference.

Am-Can Business & Tech School is an Ontario private secondary school in Vaughan, operating under Notice of Intention 119689. The school does not currently hold authority from the Ontario Ministry of Education to grant credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, and is in the process of obtaining that authority. A Ministry inspection is scheduled for the 2026-2027 school year.
